What to look for: Joe Milton’s Cowboys debut and more

  • New backup quarterback: Last year it was Trey Lance, now it’s Joe Milton. The second-year quarterback acquired via trade has a cannon for an arm but in preseason games, it will be all about his accuracy and touch. Milton had issues in those departments at college but looked more than decent in Week 18 of the 2024 season and has had ups and downs at camp. The arm is real, though. Buckle up.
  • Rookie DE Donovan Ezeiruaku: The second-round rookie has had a monster training camp and has consistently worked with the first-team defense. His pass rush is well-refined and his technique is likely going to get him on the field early in the season. I’m watching his technique as he battles backup offensive tackles in August.
  • Tyler Booker and Nate Thomas: The former is the Cowboys’ first-round pick so he needs to make the list. Replacing Zack Martin won’t be easy for the rookie but expect him to hit the ground running as he’s been more than decent at camp. Thomas is more of a mystery. The backup left tackle is expected to replace Tyler Guyton assuming the latter can’t go.
  • Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo: These two are battling it out for the WR3 job and while that’s technically a starting role, I expect both to play in the preseason as they try to prove to the coaching staff it should be them starting.
