Nothing has been settled yet in the Tennessee Vols’ starting quarterback battle, but one player appears to have the edge — at least for now.

Tennessee is in the midst of a quarterback battle between UCLA transfer Joey Aguilar, redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger, and true freshman George MacIntyre.

Earlier this week, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that it appears that Tennessee’s starting quarterback battle is down to Aguilar and Merklinger (MacIntyre still needs to add some weight to his frame — that’s the biggest thing holding him back in this battle).

On Friday, Nakos went a step further and reported that one source told him that Aguilar currently “has the edge” for the starting job.

“A source told On3 that Aguilar has been ‘solid’ and his experience has flashed,” wrote Nakos. “Tennessee still has to get through its first scrimmage and see how Aguilar and Merklinger compete, but at this point, the former UCLA and App State transfer has the edge, per sources.”

Tennessee’s first fall scrimmage is set for Saturday morning inside of Neyland Stadium.

Vols head coach Josh Heupel will speak to reporters after the scrimmage. The hope is that Heupel will share a significant update on where the quarterback battle stands (though we wouldn’t be surprised if Heupel doesn’t say much at all about the quarterback battle).

Aguilar has long been viewed as the favorite to win the job, so it’s not a surprise that he appears to be out in front. Merklinger, however, isn’t going anywhere. This battle is far from over. Saturday’s scrimmage, in fact, could completely change where this battle stands.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, the Tennessee Vols’ starting quarterback battle is down to two players. “Tennessee’s competition seems to be a battle between Joey Aguilar and Jake Merklinger, per sources,” wrote Nakos this week. “True freshman George MacIntyre has been running with the third team to this point.” Joey Aguilar is a transfer addition from […]
