‘I don’t want to have to hurt you’ – Myles Garrett had to humble Shedeur Sanders a bit after his first start for the Browns
Quite the conversation from Myles Garrett and Shedeur Sanders that was rather wholesome.
Shedeur Sanders made his first NFL start in the Cleveland Browns’ preseason-opening win over the Carolina Panthers.
Cleveland held out nearly all of its starters and left Carolina with a 30-10 victory. Sanders played well in his first taste of NFL action, completing 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
The Browns kept Sanders in until late in the third quarter before turning the offense over to Tyler Huntley. Once his night was done, Sanders found himself in an interesting sideline conversation with Myles Garrett.
Myles Garrett keeps it real with Browns QB Shedeur Sanders
One knock on Sanders coming out of college was the number of sacks he took, and in the preseason opener he was sacked twice—both times in situations he likely could have avoided. On the positive side, Sanders escaped pressure several times and ran the ball four times for 19 yards.
“Hey Myles, you think my spin sh** would work on you?” Sanders asked Garrett.
Garrett, laughing, replied, “Nope. It worked today though—it wouldn’t work on me.”
“I ain’t gonna lie, I want to feel one of your swipes, though. Like one of those aggressive grabs. I just want to see if I can get out of it,” Sanders said.
“You’re a kid—I don’t want to have to hurt you, bro. We’re going to need you,” Garrett responded playfully.
It’s already clear that Sanders is fitting in with his teammates and has been welcomed by veteran stars like Garrett. Facing Garrett in practice will only help Sanders improve—though his orange practice jersey will keep him safe from No. 95’s sacks.
If Sanders can continue to improve his pocket awareness and decision-making under pressure, the Browns may have landed a true fifth-round steal. Confidence isn’t something Sanders lacks, and that’s exactly what you want from your rookie quarterback.
