If you asked 10 random Dallas Cowboys fans who they wanted to watch the most on last weekend’s preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, I bet at least eight would’ve said rookie running back Jaydon Blue.

The fifth-round draft pick was a big-play machine at college for the Texas Longhorns and he’s shown flashes of it in training camp practices to the point of earning first-team reps after a couple of weeks of work. Being that the Cowboys don’t have other home run threats on their backfield, Blue has a shot at earning a big role on offense to generate those explosives on new offensive coordinator Klayton Adam’s offense.

Unfortunately, a heel injury kept the Cowboys from playing Blue on Saturday’s 31-21 loss. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expects that to change this week.

“I think they’re both (Miles Sanders and Jaydon Blue) going to start doing something this week,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “We should see some significant progress with them this week [. . .] Hopefully they can both play in the game [vs. Baltimore Ravens].”

That’s great news for the running back room, which grew so thin that the Cowboys signed Malik Davis for an impromptu reunion in order to have enough bodies for the team’s preseason opener. Davis had a good game late against the Rams. Seventh-round rookie Phil Mafah also looked promising and established himself as a firm 53-man roster candidate.

The Cowboys didn’t play many starters on Saturday but Schottenheimer teased a change is coming for Week 2. In the opener, not even first-round rookie guard Tyler Booker saw playing time. The head coach said Saturday night “more guys” will be playing.

If healthy by the weekend, Blue and Sanders are likely to be among those players. Expect the Ravens game to be a more accurate representation of what the Cowboys RB room will look like once the season starts.
