‘He certainly has the leg up in this competition’ – Colts’ training camp battle has clear front runner before 2nd preseason game
The team basically just told us who won the job
The Indianapolis Colts have multiple starting jobs up for grabs in training camp. The one with all eyes on it, of course, is the QB competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
Another one, though, is also very important, even if it won’t receive national coverage. That being the battle to be the Colts’ 2025 kicker between Spencer Shrader and rookie UDFA Maddux Trujillo. Unlike the QB battle, though, it seems the team is ready to share who currently has the edge.
Spencer Shrader seems close to being named the Colts’ kicker for 2025

After moving on from Matt Gay, the Colts elected to bring Shrader back this offseason after he spent some of his rookie season with the team. Shrader spent time with three different franchises during his rookie season and appeared in four regular-season games, where he made all five of his field goal attempts. His longest of the year came from 45 yards out.
He entered camp set to battle with UDFA Trujillo and has already been able to separate himself as the Colts’ top option at kicker. According to special teams coordinator Brian Mason, Shrader has connected on 87% of his kicks in camp, compared to Trujillo, who has made 78%. Mason shared that Shrader is currently in the lead in this competition. Hearing that is one thing, but the fact that the Colts plan for Shrader to be the only kicker to get reps in their preseason game vs. the Green Bay Packers tells me they are nearing an announcement that he is officially their kicker for the upcoming season. One camp battle seems to be nearing the conclusion, while multiple more, including QB, remain.
