Jaxson Dart’s New York Giants preseason debut captured the attention of the NFL. A driving force for that was the unexpected instincts he flashed play after play against the Buffalo Bills.

When speaking to the media today, head coach Brian Daboll preached why his natural decision-making has stood out early to the team.

Daboll shares the importance of Dart’s awareness

Daboll knows a thing or two about quarterback talent development and evaluation. He built his reputation by developing MVP Josh Allen, one of the most instinctual quarterbacks in the NFL. It should catch one’s attention that Daboll is commending Dart’s instincts.

“He’s got good vision. He’s got good awareness. There’s going to be times where, he’s a young player, that he gets tricked or maybe doesn’t do the thing you want him to do, and then you just go back and you correct it just like you would with any other player. But players that have good instincts, that can go out there and play fast and can see it.”

Arguably, the most essential tool a quarterback can have is natural instincts. It’s challenging to illustrate what that means on film, but the special quarterbacks have it. That’s exactly what Daboll said when he elaborated on why that trait is key for QB development.

“I think when you have players that have instincts, which that’s a very important quality to have at any position, certainly at the quarterback position, those have to take over. You don’t want guys that are box thinkers.”

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel went viral recently for identifying a fantastic example of that natural feel for the game Dart has. The play he broke down was the first touchdown he threw, which the average fan did not know he audibled at the line of scrimmage to lead to the score.

Daboll elaborated further by pointing out that the players who can see plays before they happen are the most productive in the league.

“But a lot of times these quarterbacks, the ones that can see, are the productive ones. Talk about see defenders, see defenses, understand spots. It’s a very good quality to have as a quarterback.”

Hearing about the Giants’ future starting quarterback having the mental tools to succeed is a breath of fresh air. Their last quarterback, Daniel Jones, constantly made head-scratching mistakes that held the offense back. Even after he got his second contract, it never truly clicked for Jones.

Dart has a long way to go before he can be crowned the savior of New York. One game isn’t enough to conclude if he’ll last in the NFL. But the more we hear about Dart, the more reasons we should have to be excited.
