The Cleveland Browns are now 2-0 in the preseason after picking up a win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Cleveland went into Philadelphia and earned a 22-13 preseason victory over the reigning Super Bowl champs.

Former Browns fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson made the start for the Eagles, but Cleveland got the best of him. Earlier this offseason, the Browns traded Thompson-Robinson and a late-round draft pick to Philadelphia in exchange for QB Kenny Pickett.

Thompson-Robinson finished 5-of-8 passing for just 17 yards and threw a pick-six in the third quarter to Browns DL K.J. Henry. He was also sacked once by the Browns, with DE Isaiah McGuire bringing him down. The former UCLA standout is trying to stick with the Eagles after spending the last two seasons with the Browns.

On the Cleveland side, rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel showed more positives than negatives, which is a good starting point. While I feel confident saying there isn’t a single quarterback on the Browns’ roster that Thompson-Robinson is better than, Gabriel showed some promise in his first bit of game action. Though he also threw a first-half pick-six that may not have been entirely his fault, Gabriel looked poised for much of the time he was on the field.

Cleveland has now seen flashes from both of their rookies this preseason, with Shedeur Sanders impressing last week against the Carolina Panthers. Against Philadelphia, Gabriel went 13-of-18 for 143 yards. Most impressive was his composure on third downs, completing all three of his attempts on his first drive, which ended in a short touchdown run by Ahmani Marshall.

The Browns are still expected to start Joe Flacco in Week 1, and it’s unclear whether Pickett will even make the final roster. Still, Cleveland’s quarterback room looks stronger following the Thompson-Robinson trade, now featuring two rookies with higher ceilings. Yes, it’s only the preseason and everything must be taken with a grain of salt, but by now we’ve seen enough of DTR to know what he is as a quarterback.

Expect the quarterback rotation to dominate the conversation heading into next week’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. Cleveland has major roster decisions looming, and no position will be more important than quarterback.
