Ohio State’s quarterback competition has been ongoing since the Buckeyes won the national championship last season and needed a new face to replace Will Howard, who was out of eligibility.
From the start, it became a two-man race between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz after both Air Noland and Devin Brown transferred. Former five-star recruit and freshman Tavien St. Clair’s time will come, but the Buckeyes are content with letting him develop this season.
With a season-opening matchup against the Texas Longhorns right around the corner, Ryan Day has officially named his starting quarterback.
Julian Sayin always made the most sense for the Buckeyes
The 6-foot-1 former Alabama signee, who transferred to Ohio State following Nick Saban’s retirement, was the heavy favorite to win the job — and that’s exactly what he’s done. Sayin and Kienholz were neck-and-neck through spring ball and even into the start of fall camp. But with a couple of scrimmages in the books, Sayin has pulled ahead and earned the starting job.
Sayin brings a lightning-quick release rarely seen in Columbus. While he has a smaller frame, his arm talent jumps off the screen, and he’ll have no shortage of playmakers to make his life easier, most notably star wideout Jeremiah Smith.
Kienholz, meanwhile, chose to stay for his junior season and battle for the job rather than transfer. That speaks volumes about his competitiveness, and he remains a player the Buckeyes will rely on. The backup quarterback role has proven vital in Columbus before, and Kienholz’s mobility could still get him on the field in specific situations.
Sayin enters the year with just 12 college passing attempts across four appearances last season. Things will come at him fast right out of the gate with No. 1 Texas and Arch Manning visiting The Shoe in Week 1.
