‘We just think the world of him’ — Kellen Moore fuels preseason hype train for player who has almost certainly earned roster spot
The young wideout simply cannot stop making plays right now for the Saints.
The New Orleans Saints continue to look for depth at pass catcher. They’re going to have to deal with injuries at tight end to start the year, and while the wide receiver room is healthy, much of its depth is unproven. Mason Tipton, a former UDFA signing, continues to make a name for himself amidst the preseason position competitions around the roster.
Head coach Kellen Moore showed his appreciation for Tipton’s talent and performances so far after the Saints’ tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars in their second preseason game. Tipton got some buzz last offseason with strong play in the preseason and some splash plays in the regular season, too.
Head coach Kellen Moore praises Mason Tipton
“We just think the world of him. He’s progressing in an awesome way.” – Kellen Moore on Mason Tipton
Tipton is competing with Cedrick Wilson Jr., Dante Pettis, Kevin Austin Jr., and Donovan Peoples-Jones for the final roster spots at wideout as the regular season approaches. Only two (maybe, maybe three) of those options, including Tipton, will make the Week 1 active roster. Tipton may have the upper hand over the majority of that group as of now.
Tipton’s preseason dominance continues
Tipton is the NFL’s second-leading receiver after two weeks of preseason play. Tipton has totaled seven receptions for 154 yards. He’s shown off his downfield ability and continues to get open with his speed and elusiveness.
Tipton had a strong preseason last year as well. His impressive outings have become an annual occurrence, seemingly. Now, the Saints need him to transition some of this production into the regular season against much tough competition. Tipton has been locked into a position battle this offseason, but he is standing out.
Comments like the one mentioned above from Kellen Moore paints an accurate picture of the confidence that the staff has for him right now. Clearly, they see him in their plans for this season. Not to mention, he can be depth for the return game as well. Expect Rashid Shaheed to keep the starting role there for now as long as he is healthy, though.
Tipton’s next stepping stone would be jumping into the WR3 role, ahead of veteran WR Brandin Cooks. The experienced WR has seemingly locked in his spot there, but he’ll need to produce to start the season in order to hold it.
