As the Oregon Ducks prepare for a highly anticipated 2025 season, one name generating buzz within the program is Ashton Porter.

The sophomore outside linebacker has been turning heads throughout fall camp and is now firmly on the radar as a potential breakout star for Dan Lanning’s defense. According to Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi who spoke after Monday’s practice, Porter has undergone a significant transformation—both physically and in terms of his on-field impact.

“He’s become more of a productive rusher,” Lupoi said. “He’s a guy that plays both inside and outside. He offers some of that versatility, and to do that, you better be tough and you better be physical—and Ashton certainly is.”

That toughness has been forged through hard work in the weight room. Porter has added significant muscle mass, improving his body composition to allow him to excel in multiple roles. Unlike last season, where he primarily played on the edge, Porter is now comfortable lining up both inside and outside, giving Oregon flexibility in how they deploy him.

“He’s competed with his body comp to put on the right kind of weight,” Lupoi added. “He feels more comfortable now doing both—rushing inside and outside—instead of just outside.”

That positional versatility is invaluable in the Ducks’ multiple-front defense, which thrives on confusing opposing offenses with pressure from various angles. Porter’s ability to rush from different spots on the field makes him a Swiss army knife for Lupoi and Lanning, especially in passing situations.

Perhaps most tellingly, Lupoi didn’t hesitate to praise where Porter stands in the current pecking order among Oregon’s pass rushers.

“If we played tonight, there’s no doubt in my mind that Ashton would be in the conversation of one of the four best rushers on the team,” Lupoi said. “He’d be in that conversation.”

That’s a bold endorsement for a player who saw limited snaps as a freshman, but Porter’s rise may be coming at the perfect time. With the Ducks looking to defend their Big Ten Title this season and facing a gauntlet of physical offensive lines, having a versatile and disruptive force like Porter could be key to Oregon’s success.

If his camp performance is any indication,  Porter may not just be in the rotation—he might be on the verge of a true breakout season in Eugene.
