Former Ohio State quarterback receives news that may make him regret his transfer destination after leaving Columbus
Not the news you want to see for the former Buckeye.
Quarterback battles across college football are wrapping up as the season draws closer. On Monday, Ohio State made its decision, naming Julian Sayin the starter for Week 1 against the Texas Longhorns.
Out west, another former Ohio State quarterback was also competing for a starting job after transferring, but he won’t be opening the season under center for his new team.
Former Buckeye Devin Brown received tough news at California
Brown, a member of Ohio State’s 2022 class and the No. 6 quarterback in the country that year, spent three seasons with the Buckeyes before transferring to Cal. He was competing with freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele for the Golden Bears’ starting role. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the freshman has been named the Week 1 starter against Oregon State.
Brown’s Ohio State career never fully took off. After losing the starting job to Will Howard during fall camp last year, he appeared in nine games, attempting just seven passes. Across 17 career appearances, he completed 27 of 48 passes for three touchdowns and one interception.
Brown transferred to Cal with the hope of finally becoming a full-time starter. Now entering his senior season, he faces the tough reality that he’ll begin the year as a backup unless circumstances change.
Despite entering the transfer portal after last year’s regular season, Brown stayed with Ohio State through the College Football Playoff run and left as a national champion. He does have the option of playing a fifth year in 2026, but his start at Cal has been far from ideal.
