We’ve said it a million times by now – the Oklahoma Sooners did not do as badly in recruiting the last two years as you might think. That’s okay, because you’re a Sooners fan, so you probably just expect so much better from this program.

This football program is one of the richest in history, and it hasn’t exactly lived up to its name in the last few years. But, I promise you, some of the kids that the Oklahoma Sooners are getting in recruiting are much better than what some recruiting site says about them via a star rating. The Sooners are doing things their own way, and it will work out one way or the other.

The Sooners are making sure that they hit the positions they missed on in the 2026 class while building out their 2027 class. They’ve already offered and scheduled visits with several 2027 receivers after missing out on Davian Groce.

Another position, like receiver, that they needed to address better in the 2026 class was safety. They have Niko Jandreau, a three star safety, but they needed another one. They weren’t able to address it, and that happens with every team in the country.

You better believe, though, that they’re addressing it in 2027.

Sooners schedule visit with 2027 four-star safety Eli Johnson

Eli Johnson is one of the first defensive backs in the 2027 class that the Oklahoma Sooners are pushing hard for, and part of that is because of one of their rivals.

Johnson is a four-star safety at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas. At 6-3, 200 pounds, he’s a big, athletic defensive back ranked No. 14 among safeties and No. 23 in Texas by 247Sports. He’s one of the top 150 prospects in his class and has more than 20 offers from top programs like Oklahoma, Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M, and Baylor.

The Sooners are trying to make sure he doesn’t go to Texas, so they’ve set up a visit for him to watch Oklahoma vs. Michigan in Week 2. Here is some of the other intel that Sam Spiegelman at On3 has provided us with:

Sooners assistant coach Brandon Hall has been among the most consistent coaches involved in the blue-chipper’s recruitment so far. Johnson made multiple game-day visits to the Palace last fall. He’ll return to Norman for the Michigan game.

“Oklahoma has probably been the most consistent as far as showing me love,” said Johnson. “Coach Hall is awesome. Coach (Todd) Bates and Coach (Jay) Valai have been great! What intrigues me about Oklahoma is its history and the staff. Their game-day experience from last year was fun. The pre-game and the overall experience were great! Excited to go back!”

He’s also visiting schools like Texas, Texas A&M, and Ohio State. Texas offered him in June 2025, and he’s excited about the possibility of staying in-state, and who can blame him? He’s from Texas, so, yeah, he probably likes the Longhorns a little bit. However, Ohio State is also making a strong push.

Luckily, the Sooners still have a ton of time to make even more of an impression on Johnson.
