Chicago Bears may have a few other trade chips that no one is talking about after inking a fresh extension with Tyson Bagent
Could the Bears flip some potential roster cuts.
With one preseason game left to be played until roster cuts start being made, teams in the NFL have begun snooping around the league at other rosters to see if they can acquire some key depth players before going into the season.
We see trades like this happen all the time at this point in the year where teams flip potential cut candidates or preseason standouts for mid-late round picks.
Looking at the Chicago Bears roster, a few players make sense for possible preseason trades, and the front office made sure to take one name off the block on Wednesday.
Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent received a two-year extension with the Bears keeping him in Chicago through the 2027 season amid another strong preseason showcase. QB needy teams were potentially eyeing the Bears backup and now will have to look another direction.
“We are fortunate to ensure that Tyson remains a member of the Chicago Bears,” general manager Ryan Poles explained. “He is one of the hardest workers on our team and in addition to being a great competitor and teammate, he is a catalyst for positive influence throughout our entire organization.”
With Bagent locked in, we can now take a look at other players throughout the roster who would actually be shipped to a new home prior to roster cuts next week. Here are three names to watch:
WR Tyler Scott
Multiple teams are actively looking at the wide receiver market around the league. On Wednesday. NFL insider Dianna Russini mentioned the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Minnesota Vikings as teams looking to acquire additional depth at wide receiver.
Tyler Scott is one name the Bears could look into offloading. Chicago already has five sure-fire wide receiver set to make the 53-man roster with multiple players vying for a potential sixth spot at the position.
Scott, the team’s former fourth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, continues to look like the odd man out in the competition with players such as Maurice Alexander and Jahdae Walker making more consistent plays.
Against the Buffalo Bills last weekend, Scott had a nice return and hauled in three receptions for 54 yards with a nice touchdown grab in the back corner of the endzone. It was a nice enough game to create interest for a player who might otherwise get cut.
DT Zacch Pickens
Another key position teams tend to prioritize adding to before roster cuts is on the defensive front. The Bears did so last year adding Chris Williams and Darrell Taylor to the roster prior to cutdown day.
The former is still on the roster and received some strong reviews from his new defensive coordinator earlier this week, which puts former third-round pick Zacch Pickens even more on the hot seat.
The third-year player had a disappointing second season after appearing in all 17 games as a rookie. So far this preseason, Pickens has totaled 89 snaps with one sack and three pressures. With that kind of showcase, Chicago could have some suitors willing to offer a late-round pick that can give Pickens a fresh chance to contribute elsewhere.
RB Roschon Johnson / Ian Wheeler
The way things are headed based on two preseason games, the Bears are going to have a tough decision to make with the running back position. D’Andre Swift is the clear starter after sitting out both preseason contests while rookie Kyle Monangai proved to be the team’s best #2 back.
Meanwhile, Roschon Johnson has missed a lot of time lately due to a foot injury. The former fourth-round pick in 2023 already had a down year in 2024 and doesn’t have a clear role outlined this season based on how Monangai performed this summer.
As for Ian Wheeler, the second-year back has had another strong preseason performance coming off a game where he totaled 80 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. If the Bears decide not to keep Wheeler on the roster, there’s no guarantee he won’t get picked up by another team before making it back on the practice squad.
Either player could be moved to a team in need of a running back so the Bears can at least get something in return.
