Make no mistake about it: stealing five-star safety Bralan Womack from Ohio State and Florida was a massive win for Auburn and head coach Hugh Freeze. The Auburn Tigers have now jumped into the top 25 of recruiting rankings despite boasting only 13 commits for 2026. The 21st-ranked player in the class becomes Freeze’s first five-star prospect for the year and has the program in position to secure another terrific foundation to build around.
However, will Freeze win enough in 2025 to reap the rewards of an excellent in-state 2025 haul and his 2026 class? He’s fighting for his third-straight top-10 recruiting class, but the on-field results need to show that those were accurate and he’s the right man to lead them. If not, someone like Jon Gruden could eye the opening.
Freeze’s staff is clearly doing a great job finding the right buttons to push with players who have often opted to go for Alabama or the other aforementioned schools.
“It was very tough—I thought about it and prayed about it a lot,” Womack told Rivals’ Chad Simmons. “In the end, I followed my heart. Auburn valued me as a person. They made me and my family feel welcome, and it feels like home every time I’m there.”
Coming off a five-win season that was even more disappointing than their 6-7 finish the previous season, there’s only so much patience that head coach Hugh Freeze will be afforded. The Tigers don’t want his elite 2026 class to bolt if he’s shown the door, but Freeze’s resume isn’t good enough to stick with him through another losing season.
With a 60.9% win rate in five years at Ole Miss and a 44% win rate at Auburn, Freeze looks more suited to be a high-end Group of Five coach than an SEC star. But time may prove differently. If not, the Tigers seemed to just have a new potential match emerge.
