Reaction

The first round of cuts come with no real surprise. A lot of these players were great camp and back end of roster additions that may serve some practicality on the practice squad. The QB decision is the one to watch with Woodside out of the picture.

In all likelihood, Mason Rudolph will be the backup, and the decision as to who is quarterback number three will come down to Will Howard or Skylar Thompson. There is a world where the Steelers carry four quarterbacks, or it comes down to Thomposn vs. Rudolph, in which their has been a clear favorite in my opinion.

The biggest surprise from the second group is probably a tie between P Cameron Johnston and LB Mark Robinson. In the case of Johnston, it’s clear that the Steelers are valuing Corliss Waitman a little more, and his contract savings were also enticing.

At LB, the Steelers used a 7th-round pick on rookie LB Carson Bruener, and they seem to be going with him, opposed to Robinson, who was known for his emphatic hits and tunnel vision on the ball carrier.

The first set of cuts on Tuesday featured the end of DeMarvin Leal’s time in Pittsburgh. With his release, the team has now cut ties with their top three selections from the 2022 NFL Draft: Kenny Pickett, George Pickens, and DeMarvin Leal.

As for Robert Woods, he’s the most notable cut thus far, but he was totally unremarkable during his short time in Pittsburgh.
