Bills’ Josh Allen loses to Patrick Mahomes before playing a single snap just weeks ahead of the regular season beginning
Perhaps some bulletin board material?
Buffalo is trying to bring its first-ever Lombardi Trophy to Western New York. With a reigning MVP at the helm, the window is open, and the organization looks ready for the challenge. Before they can get to the big game, though, the Bills need to find a way to beat Patrick Mahomes in the postseason. Once again, it appears Mahomes has bested Allen, this time before playing even a single snap. ESPN has predicted the top 100 players across the NFL, and Allen is No. 2 behind only Mahomes.
Allen was better than Mahomes in 2024
During his 2024 season, Allen finished with 3,731 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions, while adding 531 yards on the ground with 13 additional touchdowns (12 rushing, one receiving). Mahomes finished the season with 3,928 passing yards with 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, while adding 307 yards on the ground with two additional touchdowns (two rushing and zero receiving).
While Mahomes had more yards than Allen (3,928 to 3,731) and a higher completion percentage (67.5 to 63.6), he attempted almost 100 more passes than Allen (581 to 483). Allen had fewer turnovers (six to 11) with more touchdowns (40 to 28) while being on the field less than Mahomes (1,106 snaps for Mahomes and 968 for Allen). Selfishly, Allen also adds the most impressive touchdown, proving that he’s not just a better quarterback, but a better pass catcher than Mahomes.
Josh Allen has special numbers
Remember the days when analysts thought Allen wouldn’t make it in the league because of accuracy issues? What transpired is that Allen is the only quarterback in NFL history with five seasons of at least 25 passing touchdowns while adding at least five rushing touchdowns. ESPN had this as his signature stat, and it’s beautiful to look at. Not Mahomes, not Joe Burrow, not Lamar Jackson, just Allen. After an MVP campaign, Allen jumped up three spots, previously coming in at the No. 5 position in 2024.
Alaina Getzenberg, an ESPN reporter covering the Bills, shared in the article her takeaways for Allen heading into 2025.
“Coming off his first MVP campaign, Allen is primed for another big season, aided by his consistent surroundings. Breaking scoring records with his arm and legs has become the norm, and he also had the fewest turnovers of his career (eight) last season. But he said that’s an area he can improve. ‘This program is always going to be top-notch because we got the best quarterback in the league, so we always going to have a chance in any game,’ cornerback Tre’Davious White said.”
ESPN predicted that Allen will see a slight downtick in production in 2025, with him finishing the year with 3,947 yards passing while adding 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. They have Allen rushing for 582 yards, as well. ESPN predicts Mahomes will finish with more passing yards (4,371), touchdowns (30), but more interceptions (12), compared with Allen. Luckily, they have Mahomes rushing for fewer yards (369) or else we’d probably rage.
Allen is no stranger to being discredited before allowing his work to speak for itself. This is yet another example of that. More so, it’s an indication of his superstardom bleeding across the entire league. You can’t ignore his abilities. You can’t pretend he’s something he’s not. Allen is a generational quarterback who can single-handedly take a game over.
Here’s hoping that by this time next year, Allen has some additional hardware and finds himself bumped up an extra spot on their rankings.
