The Detroit Lions waived quarterback Hendon Hooker on Monday after the former Tennessee Vols standout failed to beat out veteran Kyle Allen for the backup job.
Hooker, a third-round selection by the Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, struggled during preseason action, failing to lead a touchdown drive during any of Detroit’s four preseason games.
With Hooker looking for a new home in the NFL, plenty of takes have been flying around about Tennessee’s offense under Josh Heupel and how it prepares quarterbacks for the league.
One such take came from private quarterback coach Quincy Avery.
Avery — who has worked with quarterbacks like Josh Dobbs, Justin Fields, Patrick Mahomes, C.J. Stroud, Jalen Hurts, and Jordan Love — tweeted that he “can’t imagine” sending a young quarterback with pro potential to Tennessee.
This narrative, whether Tennessee fans agree with it or not, will follow Heupel and the Vols around until the program puts a quarterback in the NFL who becomes a regular starter.
Tennessee has performed well in recent years in landing elite quarterback recruits. But if those quarterbacks keep floundering at the next level, it will make Heupel and the Vols’ job a lot tougher on the recruiting trail. Every program Tennessee is competing against for quarterback talent will make sure recruits know exactly how much quarterbacks from UT’s offense have struggled in the NFL.
