Just ahead of the roster cut down deadline around the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks are making a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. It’s a deal that shows exactly how this annual event unfolds around the league.

Seahawks make depth trade with Falcons

Seattle is helping out an NFC foe – while also grabbing some improved draft capital for their own future. According to Tom Pelissero, the Seahawks are trading offensive tackle Michael Jerrell to the Falcons in exchange for a 2027 7th-round pick.

Clearly, Seattle has faith in their current offensive line group, particularly at tackle. Jerrell was a surprise last season, but new additions made him expendable if the opportunity came. With this deal, it is fairly predictable that he was on the outside of the roster bubble for the Seahawks offense.

The Seahawks also drafted a pair of linemen late in this year’s draft in Mason Richman or Iowa and Bryce Cabeldue of Kansas as they re-made the line this year in the vision of new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and O-line coach John Benton, going with an outsize zone scheme that emphasizes quickness and agility over raw power.Bob Condotta, Seattle Times

Not to mention, Atlanta needed to make this type of deal. They have a glaring depth hole at offensive tackle due to the Kaleb Mcgary injury.

The Falcons needed to add tackle depth after Kaleb McGary’s recent injury. McGary is going to miss time to start the year; the question is how much time? This move gives the Falcons a tackle who had some bright moments with the Seahawks and can be solid for the long term. But there’s also a decent chance Jerrell could start in place of McGary to start the year.

If he is able to take over that job and play at a high level, then only sending a seventh rounder here will feel like a steal. I really like this move by the Falcons who didn’t panic after McGary’s injury and landed a very quality player for almost nothing. — Destin Adams, A to Z Sports

Seattle needs to be improved on the offensive line this season. This deal affects their depth, but they trust who remains for their active roster.
