One of the most talked about decisions each week among the Tennessee Vols fan base centers around uniform decisions.
Tennessee’s weekly uniform choices almost always spark plenty of conversation on social media.
In Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, the Vols will be wearing orange jerseys and white pants as they open the season in Atlanta against Syracuse.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel explained during an appearance on The Mike Keith Show this week that UT’s leadership council chooses the uniforms each week.
“If the fans don’t like it, don’t blame me, blame our leadership council,” said Heupel with a laugh. “Those guys are the major decision makers in what we wear from jersey to pants to cleats. I try to let them have fun and enjoy the journey in the areas that they can and the things that are going to affect the game. Certainly, I’m a part of that decision, but for some of our rival games, we typically are in our mainstay [uniforms], what we’ve worn for a long time. And outside of that, those guys get a chance to have a little fun with it, too.”
Two things there: One, this is something Heupel has done for a while with this team, and his comments to Keith confirm that it’s still how the Vols choose their uniforms each week. Secondly, it’s nice to hear that Tennessee intends to continue wearing traditional uniforms against top rivals. It’s still weird seeing Tennessee in smokey grey uniforms in the highlights of the win against Florida in 2016.
When fans see the Vols wearing a uniform combination they don’t like, just remember — it’s what the players on the field want.
