Former Oregon Duck quarterback looks to be a star in the making and could be the one that got away for head coach Dan Lanning
Former Oregon Duck’s quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele had a tremendous debut for CAL this Saturday.
When Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele transferred from Oregon to Cal this past winter, the move barely made a ripple outside of Berkeley and Eugene. But after his electrifying debut on Saturday, it’s fair to ask whether the Ducks may have let a potential superstar quarterback slip through their fingers.
From Eugene to Berkeley
Sagapolutele originally enrolled at Oregon late in 2024 but entered the transfer portal before spring practices and ultimately landed at Cal. For the Bears, it was a major recruiting win — the kind of quarterback talent they haven’t had since Jared Goff.
Head coach Justin Wilcox wasted little time naming Sagapolutele the starter for week one against Oregon State. That decision put the freshman in rare company: he became just the second true freshman in Cal history to start a season opener, joining Goff in 2013.
Making History Against Oregon State
If there were any nerves in his first career start, Sagapolutele didn’t show them. He completed 20 of 30 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers in a 34–15 win over Oregon State in Corvallis.
The Honolulu native started hot, completing his first nine passes and tossing two touchdowns in the opening quarter to give Cal a 14–0 lead. His poise in the pocket and accuracy under pressure drew praise from Wilcox afterward.
“He just played like himself,” Wilcox said. “You wouldn’t know it was his first game out there. He’s calm, he’s confident, and he executed exactly how we needed him to.”
For Oregon, it’s hard not to notice what walked out the door. The Ducks already boast Dante Moore and a loaded roster, but Sagapolutele’s debut showed traits that are difficult to teach — composure, decision-making, and touch. Those are the kinds of qualities that turn good quarterbacks into great ones.
While Oregon cruised past Montana State in its opener, Sagapolutele’s breakout raised questions about whether the Ducks missed a chance to develop a star of their own.
For Cal, Sagapolutele represents something more than just a Week One storyline. He’s the type of quarterback who can change a program’s trajectory. If his first start is any indication, the Bears may have found a cornerstone talent to build around for years to come.
As for Oregon, the Ducks are still in strong hands with Moore and a roster full of weapons. But after watching Sagapolutele light up Oregon State in his debut, fans in Eugene may be left to wonder what could have been.
