Brian Schottenheimer is on a mission to leave a mark on the Dallas Cowboys as the tenth head coach in franchise history and do things his way. To do that, he needs to shake things up. One of the changes he’s bringing to the table? Rotating weekly captains.

Quarterback Dak Prescott—who was voted as one of six team captains—is a fan of the change.

“It’s something I don’t take for granted,” Prescott said about being elected by his teammates. “It means a lot, first just to be back as a year-long captain and to get to put that ‘C’ on my chest. Before I got to the league, when I was a kid watching this game, I always loved seeing the quarterbacks and players who had that ‘C’ on their jerseys and understanding what it meant.”

Under former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, that wasn’t a thing. Instead, Dallas announced different captains for offense, defense, and special teams every week. Schottenheimer revealed earlier in the year he intended to move away from that and instead name year-long captains.

Cowboys players quickly bought-in on the idea. So much so that Schottenheimer had to name more captains than he originally planned to.

“I was planning on having four captains, that was kind of the goal. But the guys clearly spoke, and so we’ll have six captains in 2025,” Schottenheimer said Sunday. “The guys made it very clear—a shotty four is not enough. The voting was really close, and it’ll be cool for those guys to have the C’s on their jerseys.”

Schottenheimer added the Cowboys will feature a seventh captain who will be chosen every week. However, that will start in Week 2.
