The San Francisco 49ers still have more questions than answers in regards to their WR room. And with the regular season around the corner that’s a problem that needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed fast.
The 49ers seem to have something up their sleeves that could improve the room just in time. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the team is hosting former New England Patriots WR Kendrick Bourne, a player the 49ers know well.
49ers hosting their former WR Kendrick Bourne for visit
Bourne began his NFL career with the 49ers as a undrafted free agent signing after the 2017 NFL Draft. He went on to appear in 11 games as a rookie and had a productive four-year run in San Francisco. In total he appeared in 58 games and logged 13 starts recording 137 receptions, 1,769 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best season with the team coming in his final year in 2020 where he recorded a at the time career high 667 yards and 49 receptions. After his contract ran out he signed with the Patriots where he spent the past four years topping his 49ers numbers with 155 receptions, 1,945 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Now a free agent Bourne’s first visit is with the 49ers, a location and offensive system he knows well. The 49ers won’t have Brandon Aiyuk to begin the year, and Jauan Jennings’ status remains up in the air with less than a week till they take the field to take on their NFC rivals the Seattle Seahawks. Bourne would provide them with solid depth later in the season if they get their expected starting trio on the field together. The move would also give them a player who they’d feel comfortable lining up Week 1 as a starter due to his experience in the system. This move seems like a no brainer, but Schultz also reported if a deal doesn’t get done between Bourne and the 49ers his next visit is likely to be with the Washington Commanders. So, the pressure is on for the 49ers and if they are wise, they won’t let him leave the building without a signed contract.
