Texas added Purdue defensive lineman Cole Brevard via the transfer portal earlier this year. And in game one, the Longhorn defensive lineman made a huge statement versus Ohio State.

Despite only having two tackles last weekend, Brevard was a huge part of Texas’ defensive effort which held Ohio State to just 203 total yards. The Buckeyes rushed for just 77 yards – averaging just 2.3 yards per carry.

Orangebloods’ Alex Dunlap did a deep dive on Brevard’s performance and why he thinks he’s set up to be a huge piece of the defense in 2025.

“He’s like an anvil in the middle of the defense.”

“Cole Brevard looked, by far, to be the best run-stopping presence of the current defensive line. It doesn’t matter if you double-team him, you can’t move him. He had four run-stuffs against Ohio State which was one more than the rest of the defense combined. (Travis Shaw, 1; Liona Lefau, 1; Trey Moore, 1),” Dunlap said. “Brevard will almost surely not be able to keep up his 3.33 snaps/production-caused efficiency score, as that would be the best on record dating back to the Deep Dig’s inception in 2013, but it’s quite an impressive debut even if the production might not have been so plain to see by the naked eye in real-time.”

Hero Kanu was also a standout for Texas last week.

The Ohio State transfer made a return to Columbus Saturday and was one of the top three-graded defensive linemen not only for Texas, but in the entire Southeastern Conference. Brevard was given an 84.0 grade by Pro Football Focus, Alex January received a 78.4 grade, and Kanu was a 78.3 – combining for seven tackles.

Ethan Burke, a player we spotlighted as a potential breakout candidate, finished with four tackles and 72.4 grade. North Carolina transfer Travis Shaw was also an interior defender who played well – finishing with a 70.5 grade.

Altogether, the front seven were a big reason Texas was in the game until the very end.
