Dallas Cowboys All-Pro is one step closer to shocking the front office itself ahead of the NFL Kickoff game
Trevon Diggs is expected to play Thursday night versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
Trevon Diggs is one step closer to silencing critics, including the Dallas Cowboys’ very own front office, following the latest injury update ahead of the NFL Kickoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to Tom Pelissero from NFL Network, Diggs is expected to play Thursday night after being a full participant on practice Monday and Tuesday. The All-Pro cornerback said earlier in the week he put his chances of playing between 75% and 80%.
“From what I was hearing back in the spring they were thinking Trevon Diggs was going to be out maybe until by midseason,” Pelissero said. “He may be on a pitch count, I know they will be careful with him.”
The news is massive for the Cowboys’ chances of beating the Eagles
The Cowboys cornerback room looks completely different with Diggs on the field. With Kaiir Elam’s rise in training camp, I would expect both of them to start outside while the recently-extended DaRon Bland slides inside to play at nickel.
If Diggs was projected to be out on Thursday night, the Cowboys would be forced to field a weak link on the secondary. It probably would have been one of two newcomers to the roster (Reddy Steward or Trikweze Bridges) that were claimed off waivers on cutdown day.
The Eagles have one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. A weak link in the secondary is easily exploitable with that kind of talent. But now, Diggs is expected back on the field, which is a game-changer for the Cowboys. The question is how close to 100% will Diggs be?
End of a tense saga between Diggs and Cowboys
Earlier in the offseason, the Cowboys were openly critical of Diggs’ rehab process last year. Jerry Jones took more than one jab at the cornerback and the team de-escalated his salary by $500,000 due to an offseason participation clause in his contract. Diggs was rehabbing away from team facilities and expressed discontent with the team’s decision to enforce the clause.
Now, both sides move on to football but Diggs is likely happy about proving the front office wrong on the process he chose.
