You have to be an outstanding player in the NFL to be a holdover when a new regime steps in. A lot of times, new coaches and front office members aim to come in and start from scratch. But with the New York Jets roster, some players are just too good to let go.

So New York doubled down this offseason on players like Garrett Wikson and Sauce Gardner. Next on their list was sure to be the best offensive lineman on the team: AVT or Alijah Vera-Tucker, who is only 26 years old and playing on his fifth-year option.

And while that may happen still, it’s going to be a lot harder now that Vera-Tucker is feared to have suffered a significant injury that may sideline him not only for Week 1, but for a good portion of the 2025 season.

Update: Vera-Tucker is feared to have suffered a season-ending triceps injury, per Adam Schefter of ESPN

Alijah Vera-Tucker suffers arm injury

As first reported by Dianna Rusinni of The Athletic, Vera-Tucker suffered a significant injury that could put a good chunk of his 2025 season in jeopardy. That was backed up by Adam Schefter of ESPN, who said that Vera-Tucker is currently searching for a second opinion, and may have to have surgery to repair the injury.

It is a significant blow not only to the Jets’ OL but for Vera-Tucker. The 26-year-old is playing on his fifth-year option. The main reason he has yet to receive a long-term extension is his injury history. Through all the turnover and questions about his teammates and coaches, and front office, AVT has been one of the best Jets on the field when healthy.

Vera-Tucker was one of the main reasons that the Pittsburgh Steelers and HC Mike Tomlin have been preparing for such a heavy ground attack come Sunday in New York. Pittsburgh knows that between Braelon Allen, Justin Fields, and Breece Hall, there was and still might be a lot of ground and pound.

“I think [Jets HC Aaron] Glenn has been very transparent about their desire to run the football and their commitment to doing so. And so that has our attention as we prepare,” said Mike Tomlin during his pregame presser on Tuesday. “You can’t talk about the running game, but I talked about Justin’s [Fields] physical abilities in that area and the challenges that he may present to us.”

Those challenges may have just gotten a lot easier for the Steelers.
