The New York Jets have done something that no team has seemed to be able to do since the Jets drafted him in 2021: they have locked up Garrett Wilson.

The Jets reportedly agreed to terms with the 24-year-old wide receiver out of Ohio State.

The extension is worth a reported $130 million for four years with $90 million guaranteed. The extension keeps Wilson in New York for the next six seasons, the 2030 season at an AVV of just over $31 million.  He is the first wide receiver ever to reach an AVV that high while only playing three years in the league.

Wilson was the cause of a lot of speculation, and rightfully so, after spending his first three years dealing with terrible quarterback play, while still making sure to gain over 1,000 yards each year no matter who was throwing him the ball. Wilson was reportedly not happy with the relationship with Aaron Rodgers, but was thrilled to be reunited with his college quarterback, Justin Fields this season.

Wilson was reportedly considering asking for a trade, and while he never requested one from the team, he did very little to dampen that speculation until recently. Speaking to the media at Jets OTAs this summer, Wilson was asked if he wanted to remain with the Jets after those unconfirmed reports that the star wide receiver might be seeking a trade. In response, Wilson said, "I'm hopeful that I'm a Jet for life, we get this thing rolling and all of our best days are ahead of us".

He is the most dynamic offensive player the Jets have had in decades, and he is willing to stay with a team, who frankly, have wasted the early part of his career. This is the first wide receiver that the Jets drafted and gave an extension to since Quincy Enunwa. This is the best first round receiver the Jets have drafted since Santana Moss in 2001.

In his career, Wilson has played in all 51 games and started all but five of them in his rookie season. He has 279 receptions for 3,249 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has done all of that while catching passes from Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, Tim Boyle, Trevor Siemian, Mike White, and yes, even Aaron Rodgers.

This was a no-brainer move and I’m glad the Jets and new GM Darren Mougey were able to get it done. Wilson is a foundational piece, and along with the offensive line, the thing that can give any quarterback a chance for success in New York.

Now, Mougey has to turn his sights on guys like Sauce Gardner, Breece Hall and Jermaine Johnson.
