Eagles are in a great spot to ruin Cowboys’ mantra revealed by coach Brian Schottenheimer in NFL Kickoff game
Eagles own the line of scrimmage.
The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing to take on their biggest rival, the Dallas Cowboys, for their Week 1, 2025 regular-season matchup on Thursday Night Football.
Last season, the Birds swept the Cowboys for the first time since 2011. With minimal changes to the Eagles’ roster since then, they should be well-positioned to do it again.
They’ll also have a chance to challenge the new mantra introduced by Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer, which centers on dominating the trenches.
“Our football mantra starts with [two things]: Number one is winning the turnover battle. You have to do that,” Schottenheimer said. “We want to have three takeaways every game, and give none. We call it a goose egg. The second part of the mantra is own the line of scrimmage. It is an incredibly deflating feeling when a team just wants to run the football and there’s nothing you can do to slow it down.”
Philly’s Philosophy is Built In and Around the Trenches
The Eagles have long embraced a philosophy of building from the inside out, prioritizing strength in the trenches. This approach has helped the Eagles consistently produce one of the league’s top offensive lines and defensive fronts — a formula that has been key to creating sustained success and their Super Bowl runs.
This philosophy has given the Eagles the ability to own the line of scrimmage, which means they know how to open up lanes in their run game for star back Saquon Barkley.
Dallas struggled to contain Saquon Barkley last fall. In Week 17, he racked up 167 rushing yards on 31 carries against the Cowboys. With Micah Parsons no longer on the roster, Barkley could be in for another big night on Thursday. And as far as Dallas winning the turnover battle goes, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are always tough to beat.
However, we’ll see how it all unfolds tomorrow at 8:20 p.m. ET.
