Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings returned to practice for the San Francisco 49ers this week after being absent for most of training camp and the preseason.
Jennings, who reportedly wants a contract extension with the 49ers, was dealing with a calf injury that kept him sidelined.
There’s speculation that Jennings slow played his return to practice as a contract negotiation tactic. Jennings, however, returned to practice without a new deal in place.
The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami wrote this week that the 49ers made a threat to Jennings that possibly led to his return to practice.
“Along the way, the 49ers tacitly or outright threatened to put Jennings on injured reserve (which could’ve wiped away a lot of bonus money) or deactivate him for several games. Or they could’ve suspended him if he refused to return to practice after they decided his injury had healed.” – The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami
According to Spotrac, Jennings has a per game active bonus of $36,764 ( which amounts to around $625,000 over 17 games). He also has escalators in 2025 that pay out as follows:
50 percent of snaps: $1.5 million
60 receptions: $666,667
600 Receiving Yards: $666,666
6 Touchdowns: $666,667
Getting placed on IR or getting suspended (which was probably unlikely) could’ve cost Jennings close to $4 million.
It’s looking more and more like Jennings will be a free agent next spring — which means the former Vol will have plenty of motivation to put up some big numbers in 2025.

The two most popular theories revolve NIL money and the Volunteers’ offensive line. We know that Iamaleava’s camp had some concerns about Tennessee’s offensive line after the Vols finished […]
