We’re only one week into the 2025 college football season, but the Tennessee Vols are already dealing with several key injuries.
A couple of important Tennessee players sustained injuries during the Vols’ 45-26 season-opening win against the Syracuse Orange last week.
Most notably, cornerback Rickey Gibson and defensive lineman Jaxson Moi left the win against Syracuse due to injury and didn’t return.
Additionally, right tackle David Sanders Jr was a late scratch against Syracuse after getting banged up during practice earlier in the week.
The Vols were also without cornerback Jermod McCoy (still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered during the offseason) and defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs in Week 1.
College football insider Chris Low shares the latest on Tennessee’s injured players
On3’s Chris Low reported on Friday that Tennessee will be without Hobbs, McCoy, Gibson, and Moi against East Tennessee State on Saturday.
Low also reported that of those four, only Moi is expected to have a chance to return for the Vols’ game against the Georgia Bulldogs on September 13.
As for Sanders, he’s expected to play against East Tennessee State.
“The expectation is that he’ll (Sanders) be ready to go,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price on Friday during an appearance on WNML. “They continue to evaluate him. He’s been at practice this week. I would venture to say that he’ll be ready to go against ETSU.”
Price noted earlier this week during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will that Sanders was held out against Syracuse because the medical staff wasn’t comfortable with where his strength level was the morning of the game.
“He got a little bit of a stinger last week [in] practice,” said Price. “I think the medical staff did not like where his strength level was on Saturday morning — because he was planning on playing Friday night.”
Tennessee and East Tennessee State are set to kick off at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday.
