I don’t care what anyone says, revenge games are a real thing in the NFL. That’s especially true if and when said revenge game involves a Hall of Fame quarterback, who was basically told “see ya” by his former team.

Well, that was the exact atmosphere that Aaron Rodgers walked into on Sunday. His first game with the Pittsburgh Steelers was against the New York Jets. And all week, he (smartly) downplayed what a win and strong performance would mean. Until after the game, that is:

“It was nice to win, especially, you know, hearing some of the cat calls and the boo birds,” said Rodgers after the game. “I’m not sensitive about that. I expected that, kind of like that. But there were probably people in the organization who didn’t think I could play anymore, so it was nice to remind those people that I still can.”

Rodgers takes shot at Jets after Week 1 win

It’s no secret that things didn’t end well between Rodgers and the Jets. He went on The Pat McAfee Show and publicly explained how his talks with the Jets’ current GM and HC, Aaron Glenn, went when the new regime came in.

“I figured that when I flew across the country on my dime, there would be a conversation,” Rodgers said back in April. “I meet with the coach, we start talking … he runs out of the room. I’m like, that’s strange. Then he comes back with the GM. So we sit down, and I think we’re going to have this long conversation. I’ve flown across the country, and 20 seconds in, I’m talking to the GM, and (Glenn) leans to the edge of his seat and says: ‘You’re sure you want to play football?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ And he said, ‘We’re going in another direction at quarterback.’”

So what did Rodgers do? He came out and threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns while going 22/30 on his attempts. It was the first time a Steelers quarterback threw for four touchdowns since Ben Roethlisberger was a starter. He was lights out.

There are a lot of things to clean up for the Steelers, especially on defense. But right now, the new names in Pittsburgh are proving the Steelers brass right. And those new players were led by Rodgers and his performance on Sunday.
