Daniel Jones helped the Colts do something in Week 1 that Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, and Patrick Mahomes have never done
A special showing from Daniel Jones and the Colts offense
The Indianapolis Colts started the 2025 season off with a bang by blowing the doors off the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. The team finished with a 33-8 win, and in all honesty, it could have been much worse for the Dolphins. It was a dominant performance from the entire roster and a fantastic first regular-season game as a Colt for new QB Daniel Jones.
Jones led the Colts offense to score on all seven of their possessions in Week 1, a remarkable feat that neither Peyton Manning nor Andrew Luck ever accomplished with the Colts. Patrick Mahomes has arguably already had a Hall of Fame career, and he has never led his offense to do this. In fact, no QB or offense in the NFL has scored on all seven of their drives in a single game in nearly 50 years.
The Colts became the first team to score on all 7 of their possessions without a punt in nearly 50 years
The Colts won the coin toss ahead of the opening kickoff in Week 1 and shocked a lot of people by electing to receive the ball. Most teams in that situation prefer to defer to the second half, but the Colts wanted to begin the 2025 season on offense. And I think we found out why, as it would go on to be a special outing for the team.
Jones and the Colts offense finished the day scoring a touchdown on three drives and field goals on the other four. You couldn’t have asked for a better debut for Jones in Indianapolis. Peyton Manning himself got to watch it up close as he was in attendance for Jim Irsay’s induction into the team’s Ring of Honor.
This was only one game, and this level of offensive success can’t be expected every week. However, people who were skeptical of head coach Shane Steichen’s decision to name Jones the starting QB saw the vision in Week 1 (myself included). Next up on the “Daniel Jones career revival tour” is another home game as the Colts host one of the top defenses in the NFL, the Denver Broncos. If Jones and the Colts offense can put up another great showing when playing a defense of that caliber, I’d say it’s time to start predicting a special season from that unit.
