Aaron Rodgers divulges that he gave away his first Steelers game ball to a player that no one predicted to have a big game
A good omen for his teammate.
Aaron Rodgers was the catalyst for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ comeback win on Sunday against the New York Jets. Four passing TDs, 244 yards, and 22/30 in terms of completions, Rodgers highlighted a game that honestly was way too close when considering the opponent.
So if anyone deserved a game ball, it was Rodgers, and it was Chris Boswell for what ultimately turned out to be a game-winning kick. But when asked about the game ball, Rodgers deflected and gave it away.
“No, I got plenty of those. He can have that one,” said Rodgers when asked about giving the game ball to WR Ben Skowronek.

“I couldn’t believe coming off that fake, Skowronek was wide open,” said Rodgers after the game. “I was throwing the ball thinking, man, ‘Ben’s gonna score the first touchdown today.’”
Skowronek is on the team thanks to his special-teams ability. He offers a significant factor as a core teamer, which was proven by his fumble recovery after Kenny Gainwell punched the ball out and swung the momentum.
Skowronek was one of the highest graded Steelers of the day by PFF, recording a 79.0 score, which ranked fourth on the Steelers’ offense. He played the same amount of snaps as Roman Wilson by the way, at 10.
Do I think that continues? No. Do I think the Steelers will start to utilize Wilson at a higher clip? Absolutely. But that doesn’t mean that Skowronek’s game should be discounted or discredited. The Steelers need all the help they can get in the WR room.
The fact that Rodgers told you in the quote how surprised he was that Skowronek was the one who caught the first TD proves that these opportunities aren’t going to be a dime a dozen for Skowronek. Why was it him over Wilson on that TD grab? Experience is my best guess.
So I’m sure that Wilson’s time will come, but for now, Skowronek deserves a ton of credit.
