In an act of mercy, one of the most maligned picks on this side of the Trey Lance selection has been relieved of his duties by the San Francisco 49ers. Kicker Jake Moody, fresh off of two more missed field goals on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, was waived on Tuesday, per reports. It marks the end of his 49ers career after just 32 games.

San Francisco 49ers waive kicker Jake Moody after yet another woeful kicking performance

The 49ers made Moody their second draft choice in the 2023 NFL Draft, drafting him with the 99th overall selection in the third-round. San Francisco’s 2023 draft as a whole offers plenty of sting for at team in the midst of a Super Bowl window — with no pick offering missed opportunity quite like Moody. That’s the price of a kicker in the third round, for you.

During his tenure with the 49ers, he led the NFL in point after attempts made as a rookie but saw field goal kicking quickly go south. Moody saw his field goal percentage dip from 84% as a rookie to 70% in his second season in 2024. He missed two more field goal attempts in San Francisco’s 17-13 win over Seattle in Week 1.

The biggest issue for Moody in 2024 was long kicks. He hit just half of his 20 field goal attempts of 40+ yards — but then the misses trickled into the shorter areas of the field on Sunday. Moody missed from 27 yards out by clanging the upright and then saw a 36 yard kick blocked in the second half. Moody will now go to waivers. If he clears, his rookie contract, which has two seasons remaining, will be terminated and he will be a free agent.

For San Francisco, it marks the end of a kicking era and, hopefully, the end of kicking errors alike.
