Dolphins are uniquely positioned to handle latest personnel shakeup, thanks to a preseason subplot that suddenly looks like a blessing in disguise
Mike McDaniel is prepping for another offensive line change in Week 2.
The Miami Dolphins‘ offensive line curse truly is a sight to behold. Miami has been unable to consistently field their starters along the offensive line with any level of consistency at all during the Mike McDaniel era. Those circumstances are afoot once again in 2025 — and not just with the news that James Daniels, the team’s starting right guard, is on injured reserve after just three snaps in Week 1.
The Dolphins are poised to play this week with a new right tackle, too. Although thanks to some unique circumstances from the preseason, Miami is actually as well equipped for this development as they could be.
Head coach Mike McDaniel is prepping for Larry Borom, who played with the first-team offense all preseason, to start at right tackle in Week 2 against the New England Patriots.
Miami’s preseason starter at right tackle is back amid another injury for Austin Jackson

While McDaniel did not fully dismiss starter Austin Jackson being ready for Week 2, he said he will be preparing as though Borom is the starter. Jackson missed time in the summer with a lower body injury, eventually being listed on the injury report with a toe injury. He missed the entirety of the preseason schedule, conceding his reps to new addition Larry Borom before returning for Week 1. Now, another toe issue (or perhaps the same one) has Jackson expected to miss this week, per Mike McDaniel.
The swap is indeed a loss for Miami but the irony of it is that Borom spent more time with the first-team offense in August than Jackson did. His presence will be amplified by the addition of, presumably, Kion Smith at right guard amid James Daniels’ injured reserve stint. Borom is a bit of a maligned player but is a perceived good fit for what Miami wants to be offensively as an aggressive, run off the ball style rushing offense.
Miami, for what it’s worth, had one of the NFL’s highest early down pass rates in Week 1 amid an early hole. If the Dolphins find themselves in another one against New England, Borom’s head start in reps this preseason won’t much matter — as it isn’t his strength. But Miami is uniquely prepared for this particular challenge thanks to Jackson’s August woes and absence.
