USF head coach Alex Golesh credited a lesson he learned while he was the Tennessee Vols’ offensive coordinator for helping his team secure a win in the Swamp against the Florida Gators this past Saturday.
Golesh, who served as the Vols’ offensive coordinator from 2021 to 2022, led USF to a thrilling 18-16 win against the Gators in Week 2.
The third-year USF head coach joined The Triple Option this week to discuss the big win against Florida.
Alex Golesh talks about how important it is to keep defenses from subbing on third downs
During his appearance on The Triple Option, Golesh noted that he learned while he was at Tennessee just how important it is against SEC programs to keep defenses from being able to sub on third down — due to the amount of high quality pass rushers in the conference.
“I’m, like, the most paranoid human being ever,” said Golesh. “Literally, I sit here and I wallow in my own misery, like, ‘Who the hell is going to block these creatures?’ And more importantly, how do you not let them sub on third down?
“If I learned anything coaching at the last spot (Tennessee), [it’s that] every team in that league, on third down, you’re like, ‘Where did they find four of these guys? At the same time, [they’re as] fresh as can be. So literally, I start the week with what is second down going to look like? So that on third down, they can’t run these cats on the field. And in this day and age, it’s some of the best [pass rushers] money can buy. And so you’re like, “Man, I better have a good second down play.’”
That’s one of the advantages of using tempo on offense like Golesh (and Tennessee) does. If a team can get into a third and manageable situation because they had a good second play that generated positive yards without letting the defense substitute, it can keep some of those studly SEC pass rushers off the field in big situations.
Golesh was part of some big wins while he was at Tennessee — including wins against LSU, Florida, and Alabama. There’s no doubt that Golesh’s experience of winning big SEC games on Rocky Top helped USF pull off the upset in Gainesville last weekend.
