Kansas City Chiefs fans get good news on WR Xavier Worthy’s shoulder injury as NFL Insider shares an early Week 3 update
Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy is expected to be ready to play in Week 3 against the New York Giants.
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to get positive news on WR Xavier Worthy’s pending return to the field following his Week 1 shoulder injury against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Worthy was ruled out for the team’s Week 2 Super Bowl LIX rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles, but we’ve now learned that he won’t be out for long. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport appeared on “NFL Gameday” and provided an update on Worthy, who is expected to be ready for the Chiefs’ “Sunday Night Football” tilt with the New York Giants in Week 3.
“Meanwhile, for the Kansas City Chiefs, who, of course, play the Eagles later today, they are not going to have Xavier Worthy after that friendly fire shot that Travis Kelce took the blame for,” Worthy said. “He was doubtful, then he was ruled out. Two key factors here, as the Chiefs go into today’s game without their two top receivers, Rashee Rice and Worthy. First of all, my understanding is that Worthy is looking good to play next week for the Chiefs, and if he does so, he will do it with a fully torn labrum and a harness. It sounds crazy, Rich (Eisen), but it is something that several NFL players do.”
Who are some notable NFL players who have played through a torn labrum?
Rapoport isn’t wrong in the sense that NFL players have played through this injury in the past. One of the most notable instances of an NFL star playing through a torn labrum was Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. He suffered a partially torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder when he was still with the Cleveland Browns in 2021. He wore a harness and played through the injury for most of the season, undergoing surgery during the 2022 NFL offseason.
As far as receivers playing through the injury, Odell Beckham Jr. infamously played with a partially torn labrum from his college days into his early NFL days without knowing it. In January of 2020, 49ers TE George Kittle revealed that he had played for nearly two years with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He opted against surgery to avoid missing time, wearing a protective sleeve like the one that Xavier Worthy has been seen wearing in practice.
