Kansas City Chiefs sign former rookie minicamp tryout in latest roster move after injuries pile up at an important position
The Kansas City Chiefs have a new wide receiver on the 90-man roster as Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Cyrus Allen deal with injuries.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a full 90-man offseason roster once more.
If you’ll recall, the Chiefs had two open spots on their roster after placing DE/LB Ethan Downs and TE John Michael Gyllenborg on injured reserve. They filled one of those spots on Saturday, re-signing DE Ethan Hurkett. Now, a former rookie minicamp tryout will join Hurkett in getting a second chance to impress in Kansas City.
As first reported by Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick, West Virginia WR Jeff Weimer has been signed. He was with the team during May, among 76 rookie minicamp tryouts. Weimer was one of five tryout receivers back then, alongside WR Xavier Loyd, who the team signed after rookie minicamp.
Weimer was in pads for practice on Monday, wearing the No. 5 jersey. This comes as three of the team’s top four wide receiver options are dealing with injuries. Xavier Worthy (shoulder), Rashee Rice (knee), and Cyrus Allen (shin bruise) are each unable to participate in full as of Monday’s training camp practice. That means the Chiefs need extra bodies to ensure they have enough wide receivers out there practicing. Enter the decision to sign Weimer.
Getting to know WVU WR Jeff Weimer
Weimer began his career at City College of San Francisco, where he helped the team to a perfect 13-0 record and a California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship. He recorded a conference-leading 75 receptions for 1,253 yards and 17 touchdowns.
From there, he joined UNLV and Idaho State, then finished his college career at West Virginia in 2025. He became the ninth 1,000+ yard receiver in Idaho State history in 2024. In 2025, with the Mountaineers, he caught 15 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. He appeared in 31 career games and started 25 during his collegiate career. He finished his college career with 116 catches for 1600 yards and nine touchdowns.
At the end of the day, Weimer is a training camp body. He’s going to have to really impress to simply earn a practice squad spot in 2026, let alone a roster spot. This isn’t just an opportunity with the Chiefs, though. He’ll get a chance to impress and put some tape out there during the preseason, which could lead to opportunities elsewhere if things don’t work out in Kansas City.
