Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman continues to prove just how well he is at finding talent that other teams have given up on.

Philly’s latest signing, defensive end Za’Darius Smith, had been with the Birds for just nine days before appearing in Week 2’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, though you’d think he had been with the team a lot longer.

Smith logged 20 defensive snaps in his first game as an Eagle and made them count. He finished with four tackles (including two solo), one tackle for loss, and split a sack with rookie safety Andrew Mukuba.

“Feels great, man,” Smith said about his first game with Philly vis Devan Kaney. “I can’t thank Howie and this organization enough, man, for just bringing me in and for just giving me another opportunity. You know they wanted me to come in and fill a leadership role. And as you can see, it started out very well.”

Big Dom Played a Major Role in Getting Za’Darius Smith to Philly

Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, received more than one offer from teams but ultimately chose Philadelphia, crediting longtime Eagles security chief Big Dom as a key factor in his decision.

“You know, man, I had a lot of teams calling, but I just felt comfortable coming to Philly,” Smith said. “I know Ogbo (Okoronkwo), we was together in Cleveland. I talked to him, and he was just telling me about the organization, the locker room, and the great people that are here. Dom (DiSandro), one of the head guys. Man, I love Dom.

“Just this whole team and this culture, man. I love everything about it. Hey, they just got a Super Bowl and hopefully we can get it again. But we’re just going to take it one week at a time and go 1-0 each and every week.”

Last fall, Smith suited up for both the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, tallying a combined nine sacks and 17 quarterback hits. Prior to that, he spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Baltimore Ravens.

Originally a fourth-round pick out of Kentucky by the Ravens in 2015, Smith has amassed 69.5 career sacks, 173 quarterback hits, 86 tackles for loss, and 10 forced fumbles across 141 regular-season games, including 96 starts.
