The Michigan Wolverines used big plays to overcome what became a furious fourth-quarter effort from the Nebraska Cornhuskers. While Michigan kept a comfortable 10-point lead for most of the second half, creating a ridiculous 9.4 yards per average on the ground, the storyline after the contest remained about the quarterbacks. It was hard not to compare Bryce Underwood and Dylan Raiola.
Underwood totaled 165 yards and one touchdown on 12 completions and eight rushing attempts. His big highlight of the afternoon was a 37-yard scamper, and his passing was more complementary than effective. Michigan didn’t need much from the freshman, but the dual threat made sure to give flowers where he could.
That included Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola, who completed 30-of-41 attempts for 308 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Here’s what Underwood said he revealed to Raiola post-game.
Bryce Underwood Praises Dylan Raiola in Michigan Win
“Had an amazing game, of course. Just be great,” Underwood told CBS Sports in the aftermath of the clock running out. It was a moment between two of the highest-profile young passers in the Big Ten, and ran a bit contrary to the narrative that Underwood’s ego could be an issue. Instead, the encouragement fit the level of competition each team just went through.
Nebraska struggled mightily against Michigan’s speed and closing ability. The Cornhuskers converted only two-of-13 third downs and managed 1.4 yards per carry on the ground.
Underwood didn’t have to steer the ship for Michigan to win, so it’s good he didn’t come out swinging as if he were a catalyst in this one. He played decently enough, though, taking what Nebraska gave him and moving the chains on a few attempts. It’s not going to be good enough to win The Game later this season, but it’s a positive starting point.
