It’s pretty unclear how many games this Oklahoma Sooners team will win. They didn’t play well on Saturday against the Auburn Tigers, but they still won, and that could be a theme this year. One thing we do know, though, is that Brent Venables has his team playing hard, so hard that guys were playing through some pretty insane injuries.

“I think he [Owen Heinecke] had a fracture of some sort, something might’ve been sticking out of his skin, but you’re not going to keep him off the field. Great toughness,” Venables said regarding the linebacker on his coaches’ show, Sooner Football.

Heinecke is a dude, or a “dawg,” as the kids say. He’s been playing like it, too.

Sooners LB Owen Heinecke has had a stellar start to the season as a former walk-on

The Oklahoma Sooners know a thing or two about former walk-ons playing well, just ask Tampa Bay Buccaneers star quarterback Baker Mayfield. Heinecke is a former walk-on and a guy who truly just wants to play ball. He doesn’t really care about anything else but playing ball, and that’s exactly what he’s done.

The linebacker, who is admittedly a bit smaller than his peers, like Kobie McKinzie, Kip Lewis, and Sammy Omosigho, still has a ton of fight and heart when he plays. You may all remember, or not, because there were ten of them, but Heinecke had a sack on Jackson Arnold that was extremely impressive.

Heinecke actually fell and was blocked pretty badly, but he jumped up immediately and chased down Arnold for a sack. Heinecke has 14 total tackles, one sack, and two pass deflections. He’s been great, and something tells me we will only see so much more of him in Crimson and Cream.

The Sooners made a good decision in taking on the former lacrosse player.
