Tennessee Vols Athletic Director Danny White did something this week, after losing a key member of his staff, that says a lot about who he is as a person — and about the culture he’s helped create at UT over the last four plus years.
Earlier this week, Utah State hired Tennessee Senior Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Strategy Officer officer Cameron Walker to serve as the school’s new athletic director.
Walker worked with White at UCF and followed the veteran athletic director to Tennessee in early 2021.
Danny White and other members of Tennessee’s athletic department make the trip to Utah State to support Cameron Walker
Walker was introduced as Utah State’s athletic director on Wednesday, and White was there — along with other members of Tennessee’s athletic department — to offer support.
That’s not something you often see. Most athletic directors aren’t taking the time, in the middle of football season, to fly across the country to offer support like that.
But that shows who White is as a person, and it says a lot about the culture at Tennessee. The entire UT athletics department has a reputation for having a true “family feel”. This is certainly an example of that.
College athletics programs are ultimately successful because of the players on the field and the coaches that work around the clock (gotta have great talent to win). Strong leadership in the athletic department, however, is just as important.
A great athletic director with a great staff is akin to great ownership in the NFL. If a team doesn’t have great leadership at the top, they’re doomed to fail — regardless of how much talent is on the field or how great the coaches are on the sideline.
