Jaxson Dart’s debut outlines a path to success in 2025 for the New York Giants – Week 4 takeaways from Chargers victory
The New York Giants shock the undefeated Los Angeles Chargers in Jaxson Dart’s exciting debut
The New York Giants’ 21-18 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers wasn’t pretty. However, it was the first glimmer of hope for a fan base that hasn’t had a reason to be optimistic for a long time.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart did everything he needed to help his team win, even without his star wide receiver for most of the game. Running back Cam Skattebo rumbled through tacklers for multiple important plays. The defense overwhelmed Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert into making multiple back-breaking mistakes. Today was the imperfect formula for finding a way to win.
It’s unlikely for the Giants to reach the playoffs in 2025. But today’s win painted the picture for how New York can be a scrappy, up-and-coming team for the rest of 2025.
Let’s look back at the most important takeaways from the Giants’ Week 4 performance.
Jaxson Dart brings swagger to New York
Dart’s debut was as promising as it could be for a rookie quarterback facing a stellar defense. He finished the game with 111 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and a 65% completion percentage. He also had 54 yards rushing and the first score of the game on this 15-yard scamper.
Dart still has areas he needs to improve, but his first game was electric. Like any rookie would, he had misfires and instances where he held the ball just a little bit too long. For his first start in the NFL, he showed a lot of upside in terms of how he can drive success for this team. From his toughness as a runner to his poise on multiple late-game throws, he displayed the playmaking ability needed to ignite an offense that desperately needed energy.
The most important and underrated throw came on a third and five with less than three minutes to go when he connected with tight end Theo Johnson for a 10-yard gain. That throw set up the Giants’ offense to run down the clock to ice the game.
If Dart can improve gradually each week, there’s an opportunity for the Giants to continue upsetting more teams in 2025.
Giants’ defense grinds down the Chargers
To say the Giants’ defense was dominant is an understatement. The pass rush generated two sacks with 12 quarterback hits and an exhilarating interception from defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
The secondary also finished with six pass deflections and an interception by Dru Phillips. The Giants’ run defense left a lot to be desired, giving up 128 yards and multiple long rushes to rookie running back Omarion Hampton.
It was proven that the Giants’ defense has the athletes to wreak havoc on any offense in the NFL. If defensive coordinator Shane Bowen can continue to generate pressure like he did today, the Giants’ defense can make a serious turnaround.
Malik Nabers’ injury is going to be devastating
Of course, when Giants fans get an exciting debut for Dart, it’s met with the worst possible news. While it’s not official until Nabers gets tests done, it appears they’ll be without the star wide receiver for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.
The sobering reality is that the Giants’ offense will be incredibly limited without Nabers. New York’s receiver room is already extremely shallow and lacks quality options outside of Nabers. The receiving production for the Giants is reflective of how non-explosive the unit is. Nabers finished as the second leading receiver in the game behind Darius Slayton, who had 44 yards.
Maybe the loss of Nabers opens the door for Jalin Hyatt or Beaux Collins to emerge as quality targets for Dart, but it will likely be a frustrating season trying to throw the ball. Hopefully Nabers has a speedy recovery and returns for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
