Kellen Moore tries but fails to bring Philly magic to the Saints with unique play call during loss to Buffalo Bills
It’s a tough transition for the young head coach.
Hiring Kellen Moore as their new head coach was a risk for the New Orleans Saints. He has never held that role in the pros. With that, though, a lot of coaches hold him in high regards and respect his offensive scheme.
Against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4, the Saints felt his past play a role in the present on a particular play that hurt them just before halftime. You cannot blame Moore for giving it a go, though.
Philly special fails in major way for New Orleans
Kellen Moore’s new team attempted to run the “Philly Special” play that became famous for the Eagles. Instead of being a short gain for a touchdown, the Bills picked it off. Wide receiver Chris Olave was looking to complete the pass to quarterback Spencer Rattler, but safety Cole Bishop made an awesome play to cause the turnover.
It wasn’t a bad play call, in my opinion. It was a new look against a talented defensive unit, but unfortunately for New Orleans, the Bills were not surprised enough to allow a score off of it. If Bishop isn’t at that spot just in time, it’s completed, and the Saints would have grabbed the lead late in the second quarter.
With the interception, the Saints weren’t able to put up any points on that drive – only setting them farther behind in the long run against one of the best offenses in football. This wasn’t the only time Moore has called on his experience with the Eagles for a unique play call, either, though.
The Saints have also been unsuccessful when trying the tush push so far this season as well. The offensive line doesn’t have enough experience running that play, and it ended up being a penalty last time they gave it a shot in a short yardage situation with Spencer Rattler.
Going forward, I would expect these sort of plays to stay in the rotation for Moore. He won’t shy away from them simply because they haven’t been executed quite well enough as of yet.
