New York Giants fans couldn’t be happier with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart’s debut. While he had some errors, his first start against a 3-0 team with a stellar defense showed promise for a franchise desperate for momentum.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll echoed that their performance lacked polish, but Dart did everything he needed to for his team to win.

“Kid’s a competitor. It’s not going to be perfect. I’m sure he’ll be the first one to tell you,” Daboll told reporters. “There’s a lot that he can do better … But I like his traits, I like his toughness. I’m glad we got him.”

Brian Daboll is confident in Jaxson Dart

Dart finished their Week 4 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers with 111 passing yards, two total touchdowns, 54 rushing yards, and a 65% completion percentage. While the stats don’t scream dominance, several crucial plays sparked the win.

Daboll spoke glowingly about Dart after the game, emphasizing his belief in the rookie.

“I got a lot of confidence in our rookie quarterback,” stated Daboll. “But he’s a rookie quarterback. So there’s going to be mistakes that will be made. We know that. And there’ll be more next week. There was some this week. It’s not going to be perfect. I’ve went through this before.”

The most intriguing part about that quote is that Daboll went on to break down how Dart made an adjustment on the goal-line pass he had to tight end Theo Johnson. The clips below illustrate something you rarely hear rookie quarterbacks being capable of pulling off.

Dart’s poise and toughness stood out the most in this game. Several of Dart’s rushes required him to barrel through contact and escape the clutches of defenders. Daboll also commended Dart’s fortitude.

“I know [Dart] is probably going to be sore,” Daboll said. “I mean, he gutted it out. Son’s a tough son of a ‘you know what.’ He’s tough, but I knew that. “

Dart reacts to his debut

In true Dart fashion, the rookie was self-critical after the game, despite the fans and his teammates expressing excitement.

“I’d like to be a little bit more efficient in the passing game. Creating … a few more explosive plays,” Dart told reporters. “They had a really good plan for us. So you’ve got to give them a ton of credit. And they’ve played really good defense, these past three weeks. And we knew that coming into this game. And the vertical passing game down the field just really just wasn’t there because of how they played.”

Dart’s self-assessment is accurate. There weren’t many explosive passing plays generated in the game. However, as Daboll stated, for his first-ever game, the Giants couldn’t have asked for a better debut, considering the circumstances.
