One of the best rivalries in college football is the Tennessee Vols vs the national media.

For whatever reason, most of the folks in the national media tend to dismiss Tennessee. It seems like the Vols have to go the extra mile to earn any respect, while other programs consistently receive the benefit of the doubt (Alabama, Texas, Penn State, etc).

So it shouldn’t be a surprise that Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar is the latest victim of the national media’s vendetta against Tennessee.

Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar isn’t getting any Heisman Trophy love

Aguilar, who arrived at Tennessee in the summer after transferring from UCLA, if off to a terrific start with the Volunteers this fall.

The California native has passed for 1,459 yards and 13 touchdowns in five games. He’s also rushed for two touchdowns.

Despite the strong start to the season, Aguilar isn’t viewed by On3 as one of the current top 10 Heisman Trophy candidates in the sport.

(The voters in the above poll were On3’s Andy Staples, Ari Wasserman, Chris Low, Brett McMurphy, Pete Nakos, JD PicKell, and Charles Power.)

Five SEC quarterbacks are included in the top 10 of On3’s Heisman poll.

But somehow Aguilar, the quarterback who leads the SEC in passing yards, isn’t on the list.

No one in the SEC has more passing yards or passing touchdowns this season than Aguilar. And yet he’s not viewed as one of the top 10 Heisman Trophy candidates in the nation?

If he was wearing a different uniform, I bet that wouldn’t be the case.

It’s still too early to know who the Heisman finalists will end up being — we still have over half of the season left to play. But if Aguilar hasn’t earned a spot as a top 10 candidate while leading the SEC in passing in the first month of the season, I’m not sure there’s anything he can do to impress the national media.

Welcome to Rocky Top, Joey. One of your predecessors, former Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker, said it best — Tennessee always gets hit with disrespect.
