It’s something everyone would like to forget about.

The past is the past but unfortunately the past isn’t always left in the past, and for the second consecutive week, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is making headlines for comments going back to his days with the Carolina Panthers.

And I say days literally. Mayfield spent 152 days with the Carolina Panthers after being traded from the Cleveland Browns ahead of the 2022 season. Carolina acquired the former #1 overall pick in hopes that he could compete with quarterback Sam Darnold for the starting position.

Mayfield went on to start the first five games of the season before suffering an ankle injury. Darnold ended up starting the final six games of that lost season for the Panthers after Mayfield was released, five days before head coach Matt Rhule was fired.

Baker Mayfield doesn’t miss the “good ole days” with the Panthers

Flashforward three years, Mayfield is the starting quarterback of the 3-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Darnold is the starting quarterback of the 3-1 Seattle Seahawks. The two are set to square off against each other on Sunday and leading up to the matchup, Mayfield was asked if he and Darnold reminisce on the “good ole days” in Carolina.

“Uhhh. Reminisce on what days?” Mayfield responded. “Oh, nope. No we don’t.”

These remarks come two weeks after Mayfield publicly mentioned how it felt good to beat the New York Jets in Week 3 because “their D-coordinator (Steve Wilks) was the one who cut me in Carolina.” Wilks, of course, served as the Panthers’ interim head coach after Rhule was fired, but he made sure to set the record straight on how things really went down with Mayfield in Carolina.

“I don’t really think an interim coach has much authority over personnel,” Wilks said before practice last Friday. “If that’s the case, I wouldn’t have gotten rid of our best player, Christian McCaffrey.”

Let’s be real, everyone would love to forget the 2022 season. It was an embarrassing year for the organization from start to finish and the Panthers have tried to move on. But, there’s always the one in the relationship who loves to bring up the past anytime they have the chance. I mean you hardly hear Darnold say anything about his time in Carolina.

Mayfield and the Bucs won’t face off against the Panthers until December 21st and Mayfield boasts a 4-0 record against his former team since joining the Bucs. So, hopefully all the Panthers talk can die down until then, because you know someone will bring it up again that week.
