A pair of former Tennessee Vols quarterbacks who landed with new teams this offseason were named by The Athletic as two of the most disappointing transfers in college football.
Former Vols quarterbacks Kaidon Salter and Nico Iamaleava both transferred this past offseason. Salter, who never suited up for the Volunteers after being dismissed from the team in 2021, transferred to Colorado.
Iamaleava, meanwhile, landed at UCLA via a highly-publicized transfer saga.
Neither quarterback has found much success at their new programs.
Iamaleava and the Bruins are 0-4. UCLA has already fired head coach DeShaun Foster and offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri.
“All the buzz coming out of Westwood after Iamaleava’s arrival from Tennessee seems like a distant memory,” noted Antonio Morales and Sam Khan Jr of The Athletic. “He is 13th in the Big Ten in passing yards per game, 15th in passing efficiency and has just four touchdown passes in four games. The Bruins have way more issues than just Iamaleava, but they haven’t led for a single second all season.”
Salter won the starting job at Colorado, then got benched, then returned to the starting role.
“Salter hasn’t been impressive since arriving from Liberty,” wrote Morales and Khan Jr. “He was benched before Colorado’s conference-opening loss at Houston but regained the starting job the following week. He had a promising performance against Wyoming but threw for just 119 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a home loss to BYU.”
Vols QB Joey Aguilar named as one of the top transfer additions
When Iamaleava left Tennessee for UCLA, it pushed then Bruins quarterback Joey Aguilar into the transfer portal.
Aguilar eventually landed at Tennessee, where he’s thrived over the first month of the season.
The California native was listed by The Athletic as the No. 3 transfer quarterback so far this season.
“The well-travelled Aguilar, who succeeded Nico Iamaleava, has exceeded expectations since arriving in Knoxville, leading the SEC with 1,459 passing yards,” wrote Morales and Khan Jr. “The transfer from Appalachian State and UCLA ranks fifth among Power 4 QBs with 13 touchdown passes, and he earned national respect when he went toe-to-toe with Georgia last month.”
No one knew how the Iamaleava/Aguilar “trade” would work out back in April, but it’s clear that Tennessee “won the deal” — at least based on what we’ve seen so far.

Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin and former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer have quite a history. When Kiffin was hired as the Tennessee Vols’ head coach in late 2008, he took a couple of shots at Meyer. Kiffin, for example, told fans at a signing day celebration that […]
