The Oregon Ducks took a loss over the weekend despite having a bye week
The Oregon Ducks strength of schedule took a hit this weekend with Penn State losing a shocker to UCLA.
The Oregon Ducks didn’t take the field this weekend – but they still took a hit. Despite enjoying their bye, Oregon’s résumé quietly weakened after Penn State’s stunning loss to unranked UCLA, which knocked the Nittany Lions completely out of the AP Top 25.
That loss matters because Penn State had been Oregon’s lone ranked win of the season – a thrilling double-overtime victory in Happy Valley that many saw as a defining moment for Dan Lanning’s squad. With Penn State tumbling out of the rankings, that win no longer carries the same weight in the eyes of the playoff committee or poll voters.
In the short term, it doesn’t change much for the Ducks. At 5–0, Oregon remains firmly in control of its playoff destiny. As long as Lanning’s team continues to handle business in conference play – especially with high-profile matchups looming like next week’s top 10 matchup against Indiana, they’ll have every opportunity to earn their spot in the College Football Playoff.
But in the long run, the strength of their schedule could come back to bite them. Oregon’s early slate has featured solid teams but not many signature opponents. The Penn State win was supposed to anchor their playoff résumé, proving they could go on the road and beat an elite Big Ten power. Now, with Penn State unranked, that narrative weakens—at least for now.
The Ducks still have opportunities to make a statement. A dominant finish in Big Ten play, a conference title, and continued standout performances from stars like Dante Moore and Matayo Uiagalelei would keep Oregon in the national conversation. And if Penn State rebounds later in the season and re-enters the rankings, that win could regain its luster.
Still, Saturday served as a reminder that college football is unpredictable, and even results outside your control can affect your playoff path. For Oregon, the mission remains the same: win every week, leave no doubt, and make the playoff committee’s decision easy.
Because if this season comes down to style points and résumé strength, the Ducks can’t afford to rely on anyone else to boost their case. They’ll have to do it themselves.
