The Tennessee Vols will return to action on Saturday when they host the Arkansas Razorbacks in Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee, which went 4-1 before a bye this past weekend, lost to the Razorbacks in Fayetteville last season.

The Vols’ 19-14 loss to Arkansas last season essentially kept Tennessee from hosting a College Football Playoff game in the first round (instead, UT went to Columbus and lost 42-17 to the Ohio State Buckeyes).

Vols tight end Jack Van Dorselaer says the Arkansas game is “personal” for Tennessee

Vols true freshman tight end Jack Van Dorselaer wasn’t part of Tennessee’s loss to Arkansas last season, but he still believes the rematch against the Razorbacks is “personal”.

Van Dorselaer appeared on the Food City Locker Room this week and he confirmed that Tennessee is using last season’s loss to Arkansas as “fuel”.

“I think every game is personal,” said Van Dorselaer. “But this one’s a little bit more personal, you know, after them beating us last season. I think just using that as fuel for this week — applying that to how we practice and how we attack film — so that when we got out there, we can handle business.”

One of my favorite quotes from former Alabama head coach Nick Saban focuses on the importance of making a game personal (because the other team is likely making it personal, so if you don’t, you’re automatically at a disadvantage).

“If you don’t take it personal, you’re not going to be ready for that challenge,” said Saban in 2022.

Arkansas will be looking to make a statement this week with interim head coach Bobby Petrino leading the charge in the program’s first game since firing head coach Sam Pittman. It will be important for the Vols to match that energy.

Based on Van Dorselaer’s comments this week, it sounds like that shouldn’t be a problem for Tennessee.
