Dez Bryant knows a thing or two about being a playmaker at football’s highest level. The former Dallas Cowboys star wideout reached the individual pinnacle of the sport as an AP First Team All-Pro in the 2014 season.

Regarding Miami Hurricanes true freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney, game recognized game on Saturday night during the Canes’ 28-22 win over the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee.

Bryant gave Toney a shoutout on Twitter/X during his big performance for the Hurricanes

Toney, who totaled 7 catches for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns, delivered a number of devastating blows to the Canes’ archrival in a game that announced his presence as one of the top young players in the country.

He helped Miami push their lead out to 14-3 in the second quarter one play after freshman safety Bryce Fitzgerald intercepted FSU QB Tommy Castellanos. On a flea flicker setup, Toney raced past the FSU secondary, and Carson Beck – who continued his dominance over Miami’s in-state rivals with 4 touchdown passes – put it right on the money.

Toney would show off his shiftiness and playmaking ability perhaps the best all night in a play that didn’t even count later in the second quarter. Toney took a short pass and weaved his way through what seemed like the entire FSU defense and down to the goal line for an apparent 52-yard touchdown. It was called back on an illegal shift penalty.

Toney found paydirt for a second time that counted with Miami ahead 21-3 in the third quarter. On 4th and 2, FSU’s defense lost track of him out of a bunch formation, and he caught a short pass and turned on the jets to outrace the defense to the end zone.

We’ve seen Toney make plays this season, as evidenced by his original coming out party in Miami’s 27-24 win over Notre Dame, where he snagged a 28-yard touchdown and led Miami pass catchers with 6 catches for 82 yards and a score. But he found another gear on Saturday night in Tallahassee.

The nation has seen Miami bully their way to wins against Florida, USF, and Notre Dame. Now they’ve seen Miami win it through the air with explosive plays. And if Bryant is right, Miami fans could be seeing the start of a special career for the freshman in Coral Gables.
